My theme for A-Z is What I Learned About Writing
from Watching TV aka Justifying my TV Habit.
Did anyone else enjoy Dead Like Me? This was a series about a girl killed by a falling toilet, who becomes a grim reaper after death.
For me this is a fun example of forming your own mythology. The main
character George works for the External Influence Division. She has to collect
souls, but she has a secret quota. Once that’s met, she can move onto another
realm. A simple enough set up, but with its own twist.
For me, that’s the aim. Twilight features Vampires,
but she put her own twist on it (they sparkle, for example). She wasn’t afraid
to build in her own details, while sticking to the ‘they suck blood’ part.
Quote: “Life sucks and then you
die. And then it still sucks.”
I could have gone for: Dawson’s Creek. Doctor Who (I nearly did do The
Who but Dead Like Me was a fun eg I thought).
I saw a few Dead like Me episodes. It was a fun quirky show. Putting your spin on things helps make a story yours.
ReplyDeleteNever watched that series. Now the original Dr. Who series, I was all over that.
ReplyDeleteI loved what I saw of Dead Like Me. The premise was fantastic, and the characters had some wickedly dry senses of humor ^_^

I really loved the episode where all the people die from using the weight loss belt.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen "Dead Like Me" (clearly this month on your blog is going to be a TV education for me!)--in fact, I don't know that I've ever even heard of it. An interesting premise, though. And don't worry about not doing Doctor Who: I've got that one covered. :D
ReplyDeleteI was going to watch Dead Like Me and never got around to it. I think knowing what it is about now, I might just have to watch it for sure.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen this show... maybe I should.

I didn't watch the show, but I did catch the end of the movie the other day. I always liked the premise, but just couldn't get into it.
ReplyDeleteNot only did i love the show I based the idea of my soul collectors on it. There's a ton of books with similar themes but that tv show was one of the best all the way around
ReplyDeleteHi Vikki .. I didn't see the show .. but sounds 'amusing' in a dead kind of way?! Life does suck sometimes ... but death would definitely be worse - I'll wait til my time is due - preferably a while away ..
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
